Self care

Salt water and slow mornings

What a week by the ocean taught me about rest, and why I stopped packing an itinerary.

June on the rocks by the ocean in a pink mermaid tail
I used to plan holidays like projects. Three sights a day, a dinner booked for every evening, a list of photos I wanted to come home with.
This time I packed one book, one swimsuit I love and no plan at all.

The ocean does not hurry

Every morning I sat on the rocks until the tide changed. Some days that was ten minutes, some days it was an hour. I stopped checking.
Rest is not the reward for finishing. It is part of the work.
I came home with fewer photos than ever, and more energy than I have had all year.
Maji ya kifuu ni bahari ya chungu.

To the ant, a coconut shell of water is an ocean.
